Anti-Criminalization Communiversity: 2025 Course Catalog
Turntables as Tools of Liberation: DJing for Collective Joy and Resistance
Facilitated by DJ MAMICANA
November 15
10:30 AM to 4 PM
[break: 12:30 to 1 PM]
What does freedom sound like? In this hands-on workshop, we’ll learn the fundamentals of DJing while exploring music as a tool for resistance, healing, and storytelling. Rooted in the sounds of the Black Diaspora and Caribbean traditions, this workshop centers joy and cultural pride as radical acts, especially for those who’ve been criminalized for how we move, gather, and express ourselves. No prior experience is needed.
You’ll get to know the fundamentals of equipment, to practice mixing and transitions, and to begin curating your own sonic story. We’ll reflect on the politics of sound, how it’s been used historically in organizing, protest, and spiritual survival, and how we can use it today to build connection, confidence, and community. Whether you’re a music lover, aspiring DJ, or curious about sound as a liberatory tool, this space is for you.
